Becoming the Heart Dad

tommy and daddy post opMy name is Will Patterson. I became the Heart Dad in February 2012 when I learned my son, Tommy had several heard defects that require 3 open heart surgeries to allow him to survive.  His diagnosis is Straddling Tricuspid Valve, Large Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Right Ventricular Aorta and Pulmonary Atresia.

After being inspired by stories of other heart parents and heart children I decided to create my own blog to tell his story, raise awareness about CHD (Congenital Heart Defects), help others stay positive in trying times, talk about parenting and other life adventures.

Tommy was born in June 2012. My wife and I along with our 5 year old daughter and 4 year old son were very excited when he arrived.  He had his first operation 5 days after birth to have a shunt inserted to keep his blood flowing to his lungs. Six months later he had his second open heart surgery in a procedure known as Biodirectional Glenn. The final step (hopefully) will be a Fonton Procedure to complete the transition of his new circulatory system to finalize his single ventricle heart.
